File sharing issues

Two or more authors attempting to edit a file at the same time

Lock-Modify-Unlock approach:

• Require a person to "lock" a file before editing, unlock when done

• Used by RCS

• Poses administrative issues

• Unnecessary serialization

• Doesn't scale well
