Why isn't this a nested item that starts with the text '/JohnRankin'?
With that kind of markup the user has to remember precedence.

My idea was to use {{*/jr}} to avoid ambiguity, i.e. if it's inside the 
curly braces it must be a shortcut.

That's funny... Patrick is testing {{Group/free link}} at pmichaud.com as
we "speak" :-) It even works with international characters!
