So far I've not done this because I don't like the idea of a script
automatically modifying pages.  Such a script has to be fairly smart
and is still liable to make some mistakes, especially where freelinks,
double-brackets, and local customizations are concerned.  For example,
if we rename a page "Installation" to "InitialConfig", what should the
script do to update the link "{{install|ation}}ed"?

No, it's an elegant and common one.  The web uses redirects all of 
the time, not to mention email and listservs like this one.  :-)
