[Pmwiki-users] need some ideas for chemistry wiki

OK, I think I may have converted someone to using wiki, but I have a little
convincing to do first.

The situation: I'm trying to convince a chemistry professor to use the wiki
for class. Assume that he will post weekly non-graded assignments on the
wiki, and students can post their answers and questions about how the
answers were reached. The professor and probably most of the students are
new to wiki, so markup has to be basic and easy.

Here's the problem: Chemical formulas can evaluate to wikiwords, forming
links were very often links are not wanted. For example, NaCl for salt.

Is there a way to suppress normal wiki behavior? For example, cause
wikiwords to not form links? Then the freelinks markup could be used for
creating links/new pages, and chemical formulas would just be formulas.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
