Oh.  That looks like a bug in the documentation, probably because I wrote
it around 4am about a year ago.  It probably should read

   A free link must start with a letter (uppercase or lowercase) and end 
with a letter or a number...

It makes me dizzy, and I'm the one who wrote it!  I'm always a bit
hesitant to make modifications to that pattern, even though I know 
it isn't optimal in its current form.  :-)
