I answer myself thanks to hint from bram :)
I added to the script:

$FPLFormatOpt['forum']['fn'] = 'FPLForum';

I guess it replaces
$FPLFunctions['forum'] = 'FPLForum';

but I left the last there as well for backward compatibility.

I am still interested to know if the custom function can be replaced
by a PageListTemplate entry, and how these entries work exactly, to
see if they are in any way useful.
