Another thing to note is that a ping and a trackback are not really
the same thing.  There are services that track new posts on blogs. 
Good blogging software automatically pings these services when a post
is published or updated -- but not when it's saved as a draft -- so
that your readers will know you posted something new and come see you.
 I don't know precisely what goes in the ping message, though.

So in the blogosphere, "ping" all by itself is for "new post
notification for blog tracking sites", while "trackback" or "trackback
ping" is for "notification that someone linked to your post X".
