ok, the path to pmwiki is:
(and this is under mac os 10.3.9)
/Users/<username>/Sites/pmwiki/

so, trying your suggestion;
http://computername.local/Users/<username>/Sites/pmwiki/
generates a 404

anything other than;
http://computername.local/~<username>/pmwiki
generates a 404

so no "forbidden" error

what does seem to be happening when i follow the NewCleanUrlsRecipe
recipes is that links to
http://localhost/~<username>/pmwiki/main/homepage
get changed to
http://localhost/main/homepage
when following recipe #3
similarly i can change the links in the way suggested in recipe #1

the only problem is, when i then click on that link, i get a 404
"main/homepage not found on this server"

probably i'm not understanding something extremely basic and simple
here, but any pointers in the right direction would be greatly
appreciated.

thanks!

rene
