Last week my hosting provider did an automatic upgrade to my
virtual server, and since then the upgrade script(s) have been
invoking themselves automatically and generally playing havoc
with the load levels on the server. It's especially bad in the
mornings (8:30am-noon CST).

I'm in the process of troubleshooting it with my hosting provider.

Still, I think there must be something else that is now causing
the searches and other operations to load the system the way it
is doing now. For example, I know that if someone initiates a
search and the abandons it -- i.e., hits the browser "stop" button,
then the process doesn't abort and it continues running and
consuming CPU for far longer than needed to perform the search
(I've seen some processes running for 10 minutes or longer).
PHP is supposed to detect this situation and abort relatively
quickly, but for some reason that's not happening on pmwiki.org.

When you say you "cannot search" -- what do you mean by it exactly?
Searches end up returning the wrong results, or you never get
any results back at all...?

Also, approximately how many pages are there to search?
