I'd definitely vote for that, though I don't have a strong feeling about whether to enable it by default or not.  If it isn't enabled by default, an entry should probably be added to the standard config.php file addressing it, since it would be relatively significant.

I'm thinking about having an option (possibly enabled by default)
that automatically creates a blank category page every time the
category markup is used and the page doesn't already exist.
