Be aware that usually a wiki update will overwrite your custom
.htaccess file at the /wiki/ level.
Here is why I suggested you to place it one level above your /wiki/ folder.
Which could be:
www.example.com/wiki -- you place it in the / folder
www.example.com/intranet/wiki -- you place it in the /intranet/ folder
