It may also be useful for part of a wiki, for some Groups.
For instance a Group for archiving email correspondence, or a Group
for customer communications employing a comment box,
or a simple forum, where users are not aware of wiki markup
possibilities, and more likely trying literal spacing as a formatting
means. Thos egroups may benefit from literal spacing markup, whereas
the rest of the wiki may use the more formal "text (type)setting"
(apologies to typesetters, because this is not really typesetting).

That is the reason I included a recipe script, whitespace.php,
because it is easier to include a script for a Group, and change the
whitespace handling for that group, than a bunch of markup code.
