In some senses Profile and Category pages are already "special", in
that they get special treatment in various parts of the core.
So this aspect doesn't bother me too much.

Adding some attributes to pages is probably less special than
additional processing of things in SiteAdmin.AuthUser (because the
core already knows how to load and save page attributes, and to
make page variables out of them).

All of this does bring up a point, however -- what if someone wanted
self-registration but to manage an Apache .htaccess file to hold the
data (and control access to other items as well)?
