[pmwiki-users] SearchPatterns speed vs regular -exclusions

quick question

is using homemade $SearchPatterns generally faster than simply  
excluding via group=-XXX,-YYY,-ZZZ
or are they equivalent in speed?

reason i ask is i've mostly been using group= and name= to exclude  
certain kinds of groups (i.e. calendar events, a la Group.20090626),  
and am wondering if i would benefit from shifting to list=noevents
