Note that according to the official spec, rel='nofollow' doesn't
tell a search engine not to index the target of a link -- it simply
says to not give the link itself any index weight in ranking algorithms. [1]

So even with rel='nofollow', a well-behaved search engine can still
end up following the the link and indexing the page, and several of the
major search engines do so.
