I stopped using unison when it made me lose files by the fault of a 
failing (brand new) disk. the disk accepted files but not the content 
and this ended up in newer files withj zero length, and the zéro 
length propagated on the two sides...

but it's not likely to happen very often. Simply know to have an other 
system as backup
