You could check the web server log, or better the php log, to see what
errors might be happening under the hood.

As far as upgrading goes, PmWiki is pretty easy and reliable to update. I
find it is really just a matter of copying the new release files over the
old ones.
It is easy to copy your website (i.e. the root folder pmwiki), do an
upgrade, and test, or backup the pmwiki root folder, do the upgrade, if no
workie restore the original.
