I didn't say enough.  My point is that if you have a form value you can strip 
out the bad chars (perhaps even create a mapping of bad char to ok char) and 
then you can use the title directive to make it look "right".

For example, change G.M. Christopher to G-M-Christopher and then on the profile 
page have (:title G.M. Christopher:) and on the page that links to it use 
[[Profile/G-M-Christopher|+]]
