I am setting up a wiki (farm) that needs to be in two working languages (English & French) and accommodate texts in some West African languages that use extended Latin scripts - so it should accommodate UTF-8.

The early set-up is okay now except that I encountered an odd display issue with the accented French characters in the interface: Basically, although the output is in utf-8 and my browsers are set to utf-8 I am getting the black diamond in Firefox 2 and empty square in MSIE7 for the accented characters. Switch to iso-8859-1 and everything appears normal. This is not what I expected.

Any ideas? (Not sure if it should matter but I'm using the Monobook skin for this.) I would like to sort this out before getting to input of texts with characters from the Latin extended A & B, IPA, and Larin extended additional ranges.

At the minimum the English and French interfaces and texts should function seamlessly (I am using Multilanguage also) and a user should be able to see the extended characters in the edit windows as well as in the content display of the wiki. The latter depends on the users' systems too of course, but if I'm running into issues with French already I'm a bit concerned how this will work out.

(This wiki is actually temporary - if it works it might get transferred as is to an as yet to be determined site; if it doesn't then the contents will be migrated to another software on the evventual new site.)

TIA for any feedback.

Don.
