Hmmm, I don't seem to have this problem--are you doing/using a local
modification that could be causing the problem?  Do the backslashes
disappear when you do this on another wiki (e.g., the WikiSandbox on
pmichaud.com)?  

What browser are you using?

BTW, as a general rule, the "backslash means join next line" feature of 
PmWiki can be escaped by simply putting a space after the backslash at 
the end of the line.
