Sorry, I forgot to mention that this was with the XUL textbox, not the HTML 
textarea. I worked around it by cheating and putting an XHTML textarea in the 
XUL (nice thing about XML: one line includes all of XHTMLs functionality in 
your XUL program)

Thanks for the other pointers, they will be useful. This thing is slowly 
coming together :)
