Yes, it is required, and for the time being PmWiki sidesteps the problem 
by coding all <img ...> tags with alt=''.

The problem is simply that I haven't found a good markup for writing the
alt= text of an image yet.  If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.
I have been thinking of trying to use a WikiStyle for this:

  %alt='PmWiki image'%  http://www.pmichaud.com/pmwiki.gif

but I'm not too happy with it in general, and it also means I'd have
to modify the WikiStyles pattern to handle attributes with spaces in
them (which may need to be done anyway).  So far I've been hoping for
a better markup or answer to this problem.
