Actually, there is no such thing as a </br> tag--according to HTML
the <br> tag cannot have a closing tag (See 
http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/struct/text.html#h-9.3.2.1).  

XML just says that any tag that doesn't have a closing tag must end
with '/>', thus <br />.  The <p> tag does normally have a closing tag,
so an empty paragraph can be listed as either <p></p> or else just <p />
(however, empty paragraphs are discouraged in HTML/XHTML).
