In looking at [[$Word]] versus [[word:]] directives, here's a brief
list of ones I can remember at the moment...

pmwiki-0.5.27:
   [[$Group]] [[spacewikiwords]]
   [[$Title]] [[noheader]]
   [[$Groupspaced]] [[notitle]]
   [[$Titlespaced]] [[nogroupheader]]
   [[$Tlink]] [[nofooter]]
   [[$LastModified]] [[nogroupfooter]]
   [[$LastModifiedHost]] [[table]]
   [[$Version]] [[cell]]
   [[$Edit <text>]] [[cellnr]]
   [[$Diff <text>]] [[tableend]]
   [[$Search]] [[include:<PageName>]]
   [[$Attachlist <sort>]] [[redirect:<PageName>]]

Cookbook and other sources:
   [[$Referrer]] [[toc]]
   [[$Grouplisth]] [[wikilog:<PageName>]]
   [[$Grouplistv]] [[revisions]]

I'm sure I've missed some--if so it's an oversight and not an
intentional exclusion. But after reviewing this list I think
I would prefer [[$Revisions]] over [[revisions]], since it
generates a link, and I'm not exactly sure what I would do with
[[wikilog]]. I'm also a bit more comfortable with [[$Attachlist]]
over [[attachlist:]] to provide the current list of attachments--
again I'm not exactly sure why. :-)

Also in looking at this list I tend to agree with [[$Searchresults]]
to answer a [[$Search]] query, and [[search:text]] to insert
the results of searching for "text" into the current page (as
John and Scott have mentioned/discussed).

I'm having articulating exactly *why* I would make these
choices, but that's the sense I have at the moment. Maybe someone
else can see the pattern?
