Or even asterisks, or other things that are commonly superscripted.
Perhaps daggers (&dagger) or double-daggers (‡)?

Borrowing a cue from Christian, I've created a page where we can 
look at many of these in parallel and try out new ones--see

(I moved it out of the Test group because this is more development
