Well, since providing useful alt= values is something that is advocated
by almost every authoring guide I know of, and is so important that
W3C requires the alt= attribute in <img ...> tags, it seems to me that
adding alt text will be a common operation.  I.e., it's something that
ought to be done with some frequency (commonly performed).  So if the
markup for doing a common task is difficult, opaque, or frightening
to new authors, then you're working against yourself.

I haven't liked it for that reason also.  But I haven't like any
alternate markups (except the one I proposed) any better.
