Currently one sets the page's description  using the (:description ...:)
markup.

The current setting of the excerpt attribute is designed to simply
provide a convenient source of data; it's expected that whatever
actually displays the data will reduce it to an appropriate number
of paragraphs or figure out what to do with partial words/sentences.
It's not intended that all displayed excerpts would have to be 600 
characters.

"Paragraphs" are great as long as it's obvious what constitutes a
"paragraph".  Unfortunately that's not something that anyone 
(except John Rankin) has been able to provide a reasonably clear
answer to.
