Another Alternative could be (As I believe Neil mentioned on the
mailing list) would be to precede the [= with a single character that
could represent different things.
To name a few:
_[=

<[=
-[=
+[=
For example, _[= could mean preformatted text.
-[= could mean to remove the empty line before and after.
and so on.
