I don't think anyone would have to do it consistently; it would
only have to be done whenever $AuthorGroup is changed.  However,
perhaps another solution is to change the RecentChanges lines to
read

    * [[$Group/$Name]]  . . . $CurrentTime $[by] [[~$Author]]

and have [[~]] automatically render as a non-linked '?' or 'anonymous'
or something else suitable.  That seems much better to me than what 
$AuthorLink is currently doing.
