[pmwiki-users] slightly OT: authenticating wildcard user names

I am running a PmWiki farm with several fields. Some of these fields are
protected by Apache Basic Authentication (BA). I have set PmWiki to
automatically use the BA user name as the author name for edits. Everything
works fine.
Now I want to "plow" a new field that will be password protected, but
allows any username to work. From what I have read, there is no way to
"wildcard" the user name in BA. I would like to have something like "new-*"
(where "*" is any number of characters) be a valid user name. (Apache
password groups doesn't solve this problem.)
Can this be done? Or should I just use a PmWiki read-protect password on
the whole field? I must confess that other concerns have prevented me from
keeping up-to-date with the improvements to PmWiki user authorization, so
feel free to slap my wrist and point me to a docs page that covers my request.
