Rather than try to figure out workarounds, for beta27 I'm modifying
(:markup:) so that it will accept either [=...=] or [@...@] for its
argument.  Thus:

    (:markup:) [@
     [=
    An item
    Another item
    A third item =] @]

lets you see the [=...=] in the markup box.
