You can get close with the (:wikilognav:) directive, which
gives a compressed list of entries, pointing to the first
and last entry in each month, for (by default) 15 months -- 
last 12 months and next 3 months. It's designed to sit in a
SideBar. Clicking a day takes you to the event; clicking a
month takes you to a display for the month.

I'm not sure why the standard (:pagelist:) doesn't work for you.
