[pmwiki-users] Total Counter

I am having a problem with TotalCounter version 1.8a running on pmwiki 
version 2.1.27

Every now and again my site is completely unreachable and I have found 
that in the wiki.d directory besides the totalcounter.stat file that 
holds the statistics on the page visited there is another file created 
called totalcounter.stat.l. This file has no data in it and is of size 0 
bytes.

When totalcounter.stat.l is deleted the site is gain accessible. It 
started occuring a couple of months ago at irregular intervals but now 
it has happened twice in 24 hours.

Anyone have any ideas please?
