I would suggest getting it working with standard forms/templates (which
involves no configuration) and then, if you have need for further
capabilities, working on that after you have the basic functionality
installed.
So I would suggest deleting any templates that you have installed. Make
sure all the steps under "To Install" are completed (choose just one of the
3 options offered) and then add ?action=user to your URL.
