Yes, still.  The wiki.d directory, and all its subdirectories (per group subdirectories) and the dot files in wiki.d are all server writable.   And these pages work fine. I can edit them as normal.  
It would seem as if one of  PmWiki's internal pointers is mucked up.  It is trying to create a file in //wiki.d, instead of in the pmwiki root directory.  And of course it has no permission for that.
