It is in particular cool for discussion pages, where one page contains
multiple contributions which then are signed in a unique manner. Wikipedia
shows how cool it is.

I don't feel it unclean or anything else. Many Wordprocessors and 
Texteditors do this (e.g. replacing spaces by blanks). It can end up
in performing quality or even markup check routines. But if you have 
decided this one year ago, my proposal "~~~~" is not worth to change
this decision.

But for signature there is no way out of changing markup at save time
if you want to make it easy to have a common signature style.

So treat "~~~~" as killed also.
